 I studied Law and Philosophy at the Catholic University in Caracas, Venezuela and the Central University of Venezuela. I obtained a MJur from Oxford University (Balliol College) and a PhD in Legal Philosophy from Cambridge University (Corpus Christi College). I joined the School of Law at the University of Birmingham in 2001 and was promoted to a Senior Lectureship in 2006. In 2016, I was appointed Professor in Moral and Political Philosophy (Jurisprudence) at the University of Surrey and am a member of the Surrey Centre for Law and Philosophy. I am also member of the Executive Committee of the "Women in Legal Philosophy" group. My publications have been translated into Spanish, Russian and Portuguese.
My research has been funded by Foundation for the Promotion of Research-Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ),  the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation, British Academy, the Cambridge Overseas Trust and the British Council.
In 2011, I was Research Fellow at University Centre St-Ignatius, Antwerp.
In 2012, I was awarded the Fernand Braudel Senior Research Fellowship at the European University Institute, Florence. In 2022, I was Visiting Research Professor at the University of Vienna and Alexander Von Humboldt Fellow at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Philosophy). In 2023-2024, I was Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and legal Theory at Frankfurt, Germany, 

I am  the Co-Editor of the journal Jurisprudence: An International Journal of Legal and Political Thought.
